With over 300 languages spoken in London, those working in maternity will have experienced the importance of being able to communicate. Poor outcomes are seen when interpreting services are not utilised, and staff have highlighted the need for training.
This workshop will discuss the impact of language barriers, the role of the professional interpreter and how to get the best outcomes from using an interpreter.
The session will highlight the safeguarding and risks attached to using family members and friends as interpreters, sharing experiences and examples of best practice.
The workshop will discuss the costs and benefits of face to face and telephone interpreting options and the correct way to work with professional interpreters in different situations.
