Introduction:
The conflict in Immigration and Social Care legislation can be complicated to navigate.
This training course supports you to legally discharge your responsibilities, taking you from the triple planning process through to final decisions on asylum claims. Our unique approach supports practitioners to carry out their practice in a way that promotes the safety of young people who become Appeals Rights Exhausted, by developing robust contingency plans. This is a live event delivered over one day using presentations, videos, quizzes and external resources that will support delegates in their day to day work. Delegates will be invited to participate in group discussions and activities and feed this back to the wider group.
Course Content:
The course is broken down into the following modules:
- Navigating the asylum process
- Understanding the appeals process
- Possible outcomes of an asylum claim
- Triple Planning – working with young people:
- Who have status
- Who are waiting for decisions
- Who are/at risk of becoming Appeals Rights Exhausted (ARE)
- Talking to young people about the Voluntary Returns scheme
- Leaving Care entitlement and planning
- Human Rights Legislation
- Safety planning for those who are at risk of becoming ARE
Course Structure:
The course is an online interactive event with a mixture of presentations, videos, quizzes and activities. The course is CPD certified and, once completed, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance which can be uploaded onto Social Work England as part of their ongoing learning record.
Learning Objectives:
This training course will teach you to:
- Understand the timeline of an Asylum Claim for UASC and how this leads to the Human Rights Assessment
- Develop your knowledge around the triple planning process and how to apply this when working with UASC (relevant and former relevant)
- Understand the impact of each pathway of the triple planning process
- Determine when Local Authorities need to undertake a Human Rights Assessment for a former relevant UASC
- Demonstrate your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Local Authority towards former relevant UASC who are Appeals Rights Exhausted (ARE) using case law and legislation
- Develop best practice when working with those who are at risk of becoming ARE or who are already ARE
- Work with young people to put safety plans in place to reduce the risk of exploitation and destitution
- Develop your understanding of the voluntary return process and increase our confidence in using this knowledge to inform our pathway planning
Facilitator: Jo Schofield
Jo Schofield is a qualified and registered social worker with an established career specialising in supporting Local Authorities and Central Government around the subject of separated migrant children, child trafficking and modern day slavery.
She has a proven track record in supporting and improving the social work practice of eleven Local Authorities in the East of England, mapping services, critically analysing practice models and providing solutions to meet the needs of both the Local Authorities and the young people they are supporting.
Since January 2020 Jo has been practicing as an independent trainer and consultant, delivering training on age assessment, human rights assessment and triple planning to Local Authorities, Regional Government Administrations and independent social workers. She is also regularly commissioned to undertake expert witness reports for Judicial Reviews of previously completed age assessments and has been commended for her report writing skills in the Chambers in London.
