Immigration and Care Planning for Looked After Migrant Children and Care Leavers

Who is it for? 

East of England local authority social workers and social care managers who provide services to looked after children (UASCs and other separated migrant children) and care leavers. 

 

Aim

To provide participants with information to support effective care planning for migrant children and young people leaving care in order to assist with implementing the Department for Education's statutory guidance, Care of unaccompanied and trafficked children

To enable local authorities to implement statutory duties by undertaking human rights assessments in order to establish whether the provision of leaving care support is necessary to prevent a breach of human rights or EU treaty rights where a young person is in an excluded group.

 

Learning objectives 

By the end of the training course, participants will:

  • Understand what ‘no recourse to public funds’ means and how immigration status affects support options
  • Be able to identify what action may need to be taken to support looked after children or care leavers to resolve their immigration status
  • Be aware of the relevance of immigration status in achieving sustainable outcomes for the child/ young person and how to embed this within the care/ pathway planning process
  • Understand the legislation that applies to the provision of leaving care support at 18+ when immigration exclusions apply, and how to conduct a human rights assessment
  • Be aware of good practice points, the NRPF policy context and upcoming legislative changes
