This qualification is designed for managers and those with significant responsibility for effective coaching and mentoring as part of their daily role within an organisational context.  It is also ideal for individuals who wish to move into a development role or start a career as a freelance coach or mentor.  Designed by Iridium in collaboration with the East of England Local Government Association and Accredited by the Institute of Leadership & Management

About the Course

What distinguishes this ILM 5 Programme from others is the broad syllabus.  In addition to covering core coaching principles and frameworks, the programme incorporates tools and techniques for coaching in a range of contexts including work/life balance; managing change and developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence.  The programme also incorporates coaching psychology, creative approaches to coaching and current thinking on presence, energy and developing reflective inquiry.  This varied blend ensures that the programme is both challenging and holistic.

The programme is delivered utilising a blended learning approach of face-to-face workshops, some self-paced learning and phone/video individual and group tutorials.

Course Leader

Gill Graves is an executive coach, team coach, facilitator and consultant in leadership and team development. She specialises in enabling individuals and organisations achieve their goals and realise their full potential. Prior to founding Iridium, Gill was HRD Driector of GSI Lumonics, a US high-tech company with respoinsibility for Europe and Asia. Gill has built an impressive and loyal client base for Iridium through offering a high quality service. Current clients include: Vodafone, Mercedes-Benz, Hotel Chocolat, Computacenter, University of Leicester, the Open University, Hiscox, the NHS, Ikea, Suffolk County Council, Norfolk and Suffolk Police and Cambridge Judge Business School.

Gill has an MBA from Warwick University and is a fellow of the CIPD. Gill has an MA in Coaching and Mentoring from Oxford Brookes University and is one of the few coaches in Europe to have been awarded Master Practitioner status with the EMCC. She is also a qualified supervisor of coaches with a Diploma in Coaching Supervision


Delivery Process

The programme consists of face-to-face training modules and some telephone/video sessions and is spread over six months so that learning is incremental. The key elements of the programme are:

• 6 full day face-to-face training modules – details below.
• Video/telephone tutorials to provide support at the end of the face-to-face training modules.
• Reading from programme book list.
• Comprehensive programme notes and relevant articles and learning materials, including a copy of ‘Coaching with Impact’.

• Access to all materials on Iridium’s learning platform for the duration of the programme.
• Email/telephone support throughout the course.
• Support with submission of ILM course work.

There will be trainer feedback and supervision during the programme. The assignments form the formal part of the assessment.


The programme is accredited and therefore if completed successfully, will qualify participants in the ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring.


There are three mandatory units to this qualification.

The first unit, ‘Understanding the skills, principles and practice of effective coaching and mentoring within an organisational context’ aims to enable learners to understand the role and contribution of coaching or mentoring, and build a business case.

The second unit requires learners to demonstrate their ability to plan, deliver and review at least 18 hours of coaching or mentoring within an organisational context.

The third unit, ‘Reviewing own ability as a coach or mentor within an organisational context’ aims to give learners the ability to critically review their own personal qualities, skills and competence.

Session 1: Introduction and Getting Started - Fri 11 October 2019 (9.00 - 16.30)

  • Induction to ILM and Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring 
  • The Coaching continuum and different types of coaching
  • Coaching/Mentoring/Counselling. Definitions, boundaries, usages and differences
  • What makes an effective coach? The knowledge, skills and behaviours required
  • Building rapport. What is rapport and how is it created? The importance of establishing and maintaining rapport when coaching
  • Active listening. Understanding the various levels of listening and their roles in coaching. Barriers to listening and tips for listening

Session 2: Core Coaching Tools - Thurs 14 November 2019 (9.00 - 16.30)

  • The business rationale for coaching - for individuals and the organisation
  • Individual and organisational barriers to coaching and strategies for minimising these
  • Confidentiality and contracting. Establishing the coaching contract
  • Ethical issues and their impact on coaching
  • Powerful questions. Where are they? Practise using powerful questions
  • Goal setting - creating well-formed outcomes
  • Coaching practise
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of coaching and ROI 

Session 3: Learning Styles and the GROW Model - Fri 15 November 2019 (9.00 – 16:30)

  • How do people learn? The cycle of learning and learning styles. Learning styles and their role in coaching
  • Introduction to the GROW coaching model. Overview of the model and demonstration
  • Coaching practice - GROW 
  • Getting ready to coach. Introduction to coaching documentation including maintaining a coaching diary to record sessions, review progress against goals and obtaining feedback from clients/peers/tutor
  • Developing reflective practice. What is reflective practice? Introduction to reflective journal to be maintained

Session 4: Career transitions and Work/Life Balance - Tues 14 January 2020 (9:00 – 16.30)

  • Clean language and its role in coaching
  • Beliefs and values. What are they? How do they manifest themselves in coaching? Values elicitation exercise
  • Tools for explorng work/life balance and career transitions
  • Coaching practise - work/life balance and career transitions
  • Supervision - the role of supervision in coaching and supervison requirements

Session 5: Coaching Through Change - Tues 11 February 2020 (9.00 – 16.30)

  • Developing sensory acuity and awareness. Using sensory acuity in coaching
  • Precision questions and their role in coaching
  • The psychology of change. The logical levels of change model 
  • Coaching using the logical levels of change model
  • Tools and frameworks for coaching through change 
  • Coaching practise - coaching through change

Session 6: Developing Emotional Intelligence - Tues 31 March 2020 (9.00 – 16.30)

  • What is emotional intelligence? the four tenets of emotional intelligence. Working with emotional intelligence in coaching
  • Coaching practise
  • Reflections on coaching practise. Reflection on development as a coach. Where am I now and what is the focus for my future development as a coach?
  • Review of assignments for ILM qualification

Workshops are limited to approximately 12 participants to ensure a rich and diverse learning experience for all.
