Wefare rights training day for caseworkers

We have had one session on welfare benefits for refugees for colleagues in the east of the region and are now making this available to those of you working in the west. Jason Tsiricos is a welfare rights specialist from Luton who works for the Polish British Integration Centre in Bedfordshire. This training day is open to those who work in local councils and as casework support providers in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire and will cover the following:

The specific challenges faced by delegates around the financial constraints of the welfare system as it is applied to resettled refugees:

  • When does the benefit cap apply? What family make up will be hit the hardest by the cap?
  • What families will be exempt from the benefit cap?
  • How to identify what a council district's LHA rate is and when is a housing benefit shortfall likely?
  • Are there circumstances when the LHA cap does not apply?
  • When is it possible for the discretionary housing payments to be made?
  • Who can apply for PIP, DLA and carers' allowance? Which conditions are likely to qualify and is PTSD one of them? How much supporting evidence is needed - can it be requested from IOM pre-arrival?
  • ESA and JSA - who qualifies for which benefit and what do recipients have to do to sustain these benefits? What are the sanctions if they don't? How can the integration activities of caseworkers meet the requirements of job searching activities as prescribed by the Job Centre?
  • How will this change when Universal Credit is rolled out?

Delegates will also be encouraged to look at case studies to compare with their approach and to develop different ways of working for the benefit of this client group.
