IOM Cultural Training - Iraq

Date: Thursday 15 November 2018
Time: 10:00 - 16:00
Location: The Clay Farm Centre - Hobson Square, Trumpington, Cambridge, CB2 9FN

A workshop to help delegates understand the background to the Iraqi Culture and the resettlement needs of Iraqi refugee families in the UK

Ahmad al-Rashid and Meredith Radke from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) will be leading this workshop for the benefit of delegates who are welcoming Iraqi refugee families in their town, city or district. IOM’s experience in numerous countries has found that integration is a two-way process, working best when both refugees and those receiving them have a good understanding of each other’s expectations, cultural differences, and practices. Since May 2016, IOM UK has therefore been delivering Information Sessions to local authorities and receiving communities to increase their knowledge of the communities being resettled to the UK. This in turn can help reduce the adjustment period for refugees and support strong, appropriate integration services. Workshop participants will learn about:

• Modern and ancient Iraqi history
• Iraq’s geography, demographics, religions and Cultural groups
• Cultural traditions (etiquette, clothing, holidays, diet, family)
• Health and education systems in Iraq
• Displacement and the humanitarian crisis
• The experience of a resettled refugee
• Pre-departure services by IOM
• The cultural adjustment experience

Places are limited, and if we are over-subscribed, we will allocate places to delegates who are already working with Iraqi families in the East of England.
